Meet Amelia

My dream has come true. I’m now the official dog mama to a baby corgi named Amelia.

That’s right, Amelia…like Amelia Bedelia. Amelia is a really pretty name–it’s child-worthy, actually–but dude, did I loooove those books as a kid.

Amelia Bedelia did her housekeeping duties so literally, like that time she put sponges into a sponge cake. And this baby corgi is literally the cutest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. The name fits.

When I first saw her, I cried. I’m guessing it was one part charming and one part terrifying. There was just so much raw Adrianna-LOVES-corgis-emotion running through my lil’ body that I just couldn’t help it.

This blog post is all about her first walk. I was an epic one. (Not really.) And I’d like to introduce you two…

The thing about puppies that you don’t realize is that they’re like babies. BIG babies.

They need constant attention, they sleep in only 3-4 hour increments and they cry whenever they’re confused.

Amelia is incredibly confused about reflections. The mirror is her enemy!

Amelia is also confused with collars and walking in an orderly fashion.

She’d much rather walk in a jig-jag pattern sans order.

She also doesn’t understand why she can’t chew my shoe laces as she’s walks down the street.

That would be an ideal situation for her!

This is her “I think walking a lot is stupid” face. She’s tired and lazy and wants to take a break.

So she does. And looks ridiculously cute while doing so.

We called her name excitedly, tugged and pulled her collar with no luck. Amelia was tired, man. She was over it. So she got her way and was carried the rest of the way home.

I have to say, 2012 was one of the best years yet. It was filled with some challenges, for sure, but it also was filled with so much food, friends, Joshua and now, Amelia.

I’ve never been so excited for the future.

Wishing you all the very best in 2013. Thank you so much for being here. I appreciate you!

She’s adorable! It’s killing me waiting until August to get my own puppy when I finally move out of my apartment. I don’t know a lot about corgis specifically, but she might not have been up for the long walk because most puppies can’t handle a lot of walking on their delicate growing joints. Have fun!

  • Reply suzanne Perazzini January 1, 2013 at 1:19 pm

She is so gorgeous. I wish we could have a dog again – I grew up on a farm with numerous dogs, but we work full time and that’s not okay for a small dog. As you said, they are like babies and need taking care of. She will bring much joy to your lives. Happy New Year.

  • Reply Cheri January 1, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Puppies really ARE like babies and sometimes they outgrow it and sometimes they don’t! lol I speak from experience here! This cutie makes me want to be really responsible and run to the animal shelter and adopt all the poor homeless pets there that need safe, warm, loving homes so they aren’t killed just because they are not wanted. πŸ™ Hope you and Amelia have a long and happy life together! Just be patient and kind with her and calmly redirect her when she’s doing what she’s not supposed to and she’ll learn. Good luck!

WHAT A MUNCHKIN. How is she even real.

Also, fair warning, my darlin and I adopted a two-ish year old rescue border collie/chow mix in spring ’09 and TO THIS DAY, even at 6 years old with three walks daily and successfully learning LOTS of other concepts (including high-five, duh), Radley can’t walk in a straight line.

  • Reply Maggie January 2, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Amelia definitely needs to make regular appearances in the blog. Being gone 11 hours a day definitely has its downsides (no puppies in my life! sad day). She’s just precious and looks like an excellent snuggler! Congrats!!

  • Reply Pamela January 2, 2013 at 5:12 pm

Adorable! My pup is a 6-year-old Scottish Terrier – she cried constantly when I got her home and chewed on everything in sight. I tried all the usual tricks to calm her crying, and the only thing that worked well was running the dryer on a fluff/no-heat cycle at bedtime. As for chewing, I tried the strongest bitter spray I could find (supposedly for horses), and she just walked along behind me and licked it up. Thankfully she grew out of it.

    Enjoy Amelia!

    • Reply Adrianna January 3, 2013 at 2:32 pm

Omygoodness! Haha. That is amazing. Luckily Amelia is a little better than that but for 2 hours every day she turns into devil corgi. It’s scary!
