There’s no winter equivalent to the term “dog days of summer,” is there? I feel like whatever that would be, we’re in it. It’s sort of a waiting game, it feels like, for flowers to bloom and other produce besides turnips and beets to show up.

And yes, I know I live in Los Angeles, a place where winter never really arrives, but I feel like, we too, are sort of in a bit of a slump. February is slumpy, man!

Cute key limes are here to the rescue and they come in form of this pie, which you should eat a lot of. Pie cures all sorts of things, including but not limited to, the winter blues.

I used to get the winter blues when I lived in North Carolina. For weeks it would be dark and gloomy and my skin would get soooo chapped and dry because of the weather. A doctor once told me I should go to a tanning bed because it would help my mood. I thought it was insane so I went, which is strange because I’m already brown, but it actually helped

This coconut key lime pie is like the equivalent of sitting in the sun. It will give you images of beaches and blue and green oceans and palm trees.

I’ve actually ventured down to Key West, Floria many times. I have a bit of a fondness for it. It’s not a fancy place at all but it’s one of the only places in the country where you can see the sunrise and sunset in the same place.

Spicy Watermelon Granita

Spicy Watermelon Granita // www.acozykitchen.com

I have lots of random thoughts going on in my brain right now.

Number one: If I could write my blog posts using emojis I would. I probably would’ve inserted a fire emoji and a smiley face (with the sunglasses on, of course!) next to the title of this post. I wonder when/if Apple is ever gonna put emojis on a keyboard. That’ll be the end. I’ll be the most annoying person in the world.

Number two: I just realized that Lindsay Lohan’s dress (from her interview with the big O) is actually the same shade of yellow/orange as the soup from yesterday. Very matchy-matchy!

Number three: I know I’ve had a productive day when my feet hurt and my shorts and shirt are stained and all I want to do is sit in bed and eat whatever is in the freezer/fridge. Currently: a small bowl of this Spicy Watermelon Granita. It’s the perfect dessert that doesn’t really taste like a big dessert. This ain’t no cake. It’s refreshing and light and the spice is a nice kick.

I really love sleeping.

I know most people like sleeping, but I really really love it. I don’t like sleeping for long periods of time (hello headaches), but the sleep I do get is heavenly. I wake up sometimes wishing I could repeat the sleep.

Like, I wish I could go back in time to midnight and do the whole thing over again. Which is sort of ironic, considering I fall asleep at midnight dreaming about the next morning cup of coffee.

I lay my head down on my pillow and can literally hear the sound of the coffee pouring out of my chemex and into my mug. I’m a weird human, I understand.

Despite my sleep-loving attitude, I’m not particular about pillows. I don’t need fancy pillows, goose-down pillows, thempur-pedic pillows (though I actually have one and love it) or any of that fancy stuff. I just need something a piece of foam that smells good and is soft. I’m a simple pillow person!

But if I’m gonna eat pillows, I need them to be stuffed with cool stuff like spiced pumpkin and mascarpone and lemon zest. Very important.
