There is nothing difficult about this. Not even a little bit.
But for some reason I’ve always been hesitant about preparing matcha at home because I was afraid I would do it incorrectly. Green tea in Japan is serious business and there absolutely is a right way and a wrong way.
To make sure I was doing it right, I tried to go to a class but then I missed it because I didn’t have my life together so I did the next best thing: I watched LOTS of YouTube videos on the subject and I feel like now I can properly talk about making a cup of warm matcha.
Let’s start with what matcha is. With most teas, you simply steep the leaves in hot water, but with matcha you actually are consuming the leaves. Matcha powder is greeen tea leaves ground up very finely so they dissolve into the water.
To start, I like to sift about 1 teaspoon of matcha powder to ensure that all of the lil’ bits of matcha are broken up.
I then pour about a tablespoon of hot water into the bottom of the mug.
I then whisk away until a loose paste forms. This part is very important because you want to make sure any bits of matcha have dissolved.
I feel like matcha is having a moment. Spotlight is on matcha. Like every week on the Instagram I see a new-to-me dessert using beautiful green matcha and am like WHOA! SIQ! Well, here’s another I’m throwing in the mix, though when I went to Google “matcha cheesecake,” thinking I would be the sole inventor, I quickly realized a genius I am not.
That’s usually how my day goes: 1. Think of genius idea. 2. Google genius idea. 3. Discover a million people have already done it and watch as my genius idea turns into a “genius idea.” It’s sad.
So, to make mine different, I did a lil’ swirl action, which made me super excited. This cheesecake actually sort of matches this green gazpacho. If you wanted to do a green and white swirl themed dinner party, these two guys would be great for that!
What do we think of people who eat things like cupcakes, French fries, candy bars and snow cones with a knife and fork? Are they dumb? Or just plain sophisticated? I vote BOTH.
Last week I combined numbers two and three and took a picture of a stranger eating a chocolate chip cookie with a fork and knife. He was out in public TOTALLY SHAMELESS. I took a sneak pic and thought about putting it up on Twitter, but then felt guilty. Here’s this guy doing a very private thing out in public and I’m about to take a picture and laugh at him to my internet friends. So I didn’t.
These cupcakes are delicious. Weirdly delicious. Fork and knife totally optional.
I have getting older plans. Not just older like, fifty-five…but like older older. You know…
And I’ve decided that when I’m that age, I’m gonna have a group of old lady friends..and we’re gonna be ladies who lunch. On the regular.
We’re gonna get dressed up, wear brooches on our tops, curl our hairs all nice, go to lunch, gossip and laugh a lot…and probably get really drunk. Because I mean, why not…we’re gonna die soon.
I got this idea when I met my future-older-self in the elevator, at a museum, this past weekend.
This older woman was with her group of girlfriends. They looked beautiful in pretty outfits. Their make-up was done perfectly. Their eyes were warm and their laughs were genuine.
They chatted to each other about what they had for lunch (cobb salad!) and who their favorite contemporary artists were. I smiled at them. I told them they looked nice. I totally had girl crushes on them.
And then one of the women turned to me and said something that I’ll never forget. She said, “Always dress for the elevator, honey. You never know who you’ll be stuck in one with.”
