I know what you’re probably eating today. I’m gonna take a very wild guess. It’s a sandwich, piled high with shredded dark meat turkey and cranberry sauce and mayonnaise and if you’re super crazy, you might’ve added mashed potatoes on your bread. I say live it up because in January everyone is going to be on a cleanse.
This recipe is all about using up those last bits of pumpkin puree you might have in your fridge from the pumpkin pie you maybe made. Or maybe didn’t.
For this post I teamed up with presse. I figured it was a good match because nothing goes better with doughnuts than coffee…and vice a versa.
Today is National Big Ass Doughnut Day, did you know that?!
You didn’t know that because it’s not. I would just like it to be. Or maybe I’m just tired of reading about anything national day and this is my way of being a brat about it.
Regardless, there’s a big doughnut just waiting to be made. It starts with a big doughnut pan set. I know. It sucks but it really does require a special pan. A bundt pan will do in a pinch. Luckily, the pan is pretty cheap.
Another thing that is required (yet fun) are homemade BIG sprinkles. Because a big doughnut needs sprinkles that are appropriate in size. So, let’s make homemade sprinkles. Of course, if you’re feeling especially lazy, you can just pour da regular kind on. NO SHAME!
I doubled my chocolate baked doughnut recipe and followed the ratios for the recipe for sprinkles from Food52. If you’ve never made sprinkles before, they are about a million times easier than you would think.
Today is National Doughnut day which means you must make these…this weekend. I honestly never pay attention to this day or that day because it seems like every single day it’s something else. Also, who came up with these designated food days? Where’s the calendar where all these days exist? And if it’s just some rando person coming up with them, then can I come up with a dedicated day?
Mine will probably be sort of specific…like, Skip-Work-And-Pet-A-Corgi-Day, or Let’s-Make-Pie-Day-And-Give-It-To-Our-Neighbor-Day, or Let’s-Get-Our-Nails-Did-And-Then-Eat-Tacos-Day. Basically my days have a lot more to them than just eating one type of meal or food item…they’d be adventure-driven. Anyway, that’s not going to happen so here’s a recipe so you can just make doughnuts.
It was the day before Valentine’s day and I was contemplating what I should make for Josh as a present. I settled on doughnut ice cream and was taking Amelia for her right-before-evening walk. I started contemplating the execution: soaking the doughnuts, infusing them in the milk vs. pureeing them in a blender with the milk and cream and then straining them.
We walk past the elementary school and out walks Sebastian. He’s six-ish, wearing a backpack that’s filled with way too many books, making it practically the size of him. He waves at Amelia and she immediately starts shaking her body with excitement like she’s doing The Twist. Sebastian asks if he can walk her to the corner and I say ok. We start to walk and he begins to tell me how he loves corgis and how they’re The Queen’s dog.
He then asks if he can run and have her chase him in the field attached to the school. I say ok again and let her off the leash. He bolts down the field, she takes off, trying her hardest to catch up. They both run in the street and almost give me a heart attack, which makes me scream at both of them, asking if they’re lunatics. They come back and my stomach reenters my body. They run back and forth back and forth. Staring at their young energy makes me feel old, it makes me wish I was the one who was running, which is absurd because it could be. All I’d have to do is just run.
Sebastian falls to the grass and Amelia starts licking his face and he’s laughing and saying ew and laughing some more until finally Amelia stops and lays next to him. The sun is setting in this way only Los Angeles can set a sun. Hues of pink and blue and coral shoot out from the horizon making me contemplate God and nature and everything I say I don’t believe in. It’s transcendent.
I sit in the grass with them and listen while Sebastian tells me a confusing story, the way six-year-olds tell stories. I listen and nod and smile and listen some more and say to myself this is what good is. Sebastian’s brother calls him and they head home. Amelia and I walk off in the opposite direction to finish our walk.
And then I come home and make some of the best ice cream I’ve ever made.

Think of it like a dinner party menu, all inspired by my favorite meal of the day: breakfast. There’s doughnuts, fancy popcorn (I eat this for breakfast), and a potato and chick pea hash cooked in duck fat. Holy moly! YES!
I made this for my friends. I honestly don’t have many dinner parties because I live in a teeny-tiny place and going out to restaurants is a serious hobby of mine. BUT last week was different; it was nice outside, I had rosé chilling in the fridge and I decided to make some breakfast for dinner.
We sat outside, we gossiped, we laughed. This all means summer is all up in our faces…and I’m excited about it. Aren’t you?!
