I love sandwiches. I mean, I’m the creator of the famous Sandwich Series on Instagram. Yes, I claim that. I love everything from a beautiful BLT, New York’s Chopped Cheese to the ultimate Tuna Melt.

Ingredients for this Jerk Chicken Sandwich

  1. Jerk chicken. I love using my recipe for Jerk Chicken. Can you use another chicken (like my Pollo a la Brasa chicken)? Sure, but then it’s not a jerk chicken sandwich lol.
  2. Jicama. This adds the most delicious crunch for our slaw. I like to cube this up.
  3. Green papaya. This adds another layer of delicious crunch for the slaw.
  4. Lime. This lends a nice level of acidity to the slaw.
  5. Mayonniase. We’re not using this in the slaw, instead we’re adding a smear of it to the buns.

For the rest of the ingredients, please refer to the recipe index card below!

How to Make this Jerk Chicken Sandwich with Jicama Slaw

  1. Shred the chicken. Using a fork, shred the chicken or cut it up into bite size pieces.
  2. Make the Slaw: In a medium bowl, mix together the shredded papaya, diced jicama, minced cilantro, sugar, lime juice, and salt.
  3. Marinate the slaw. I like for it to sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. This really allows the flavors to merry together.
  4. Warm up the buns. I like to warm these up in a pan or in the oven.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches. Add a swipe of mayonnaise to both sides of the buns. Top with the shredded jerk chicken and a huge scoop of the slaw. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

Is jerk chicken spicy?

Yep! It has a bit of a kick to it. But the recipe I have allows you to scale up or scale down depending on your preference.

Can I make the slaw ahead?

Yes! It stays crunchy up to two days in the fridge. So feel free to prep it a few days ahead.

Jerk Chicken Sandwich with Jicama Slaw

Prep: 15 minutes
Assembly Time: 5 minutes
Total: 20 minutes
Servings: 4 people
This Jerk Chicken Sandwich has shredded jerk chicken and is paired with a crunchy and bright jicama slaw. Serve these on soft buns for a delicious sandwich experience.

Ingredients

Jicama Slaw:

  • 2 cups shredded green papaya, unpeeled, from about 1/4 green papaya
  • 1/2 diced jicama, from about 1/2 jicama
  • 3 tablespoons minced cilantro, from 1 bunch
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Juice from 3 limes
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Sandwiches:

  • Soft hamburger buns
  • Mayonnaise
  • Shredded jerk chicken

Instructions

To Make the Jicama Slaw:

  • In a medium bowl, toss together the papaya, jicama, minced cilantro, sugar, lime juice and salt. Transfer to the fridge to marinate for 30 minutes. I swear this slaw tastes a million times better after it has time to sit.

To assemble the sandwiches:

  • Toast the buns in a 300 degree F oven. Smother each bun with mayonnaise. Top with shredded jerk chicken and a large spoonful of slaw. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.

  1. Really like the photos! Also, I’ve been looking for the perfect summer side dish to jerk chicken, and this slaw sounds so refreshing and the perfect compliment.

  2. So… I love your blog and the personality you put into every single post. Your pics are beautiful – who doesn’t want to see a lime?! Sheesh. Freaking gorgeous. If people want their hands to be held through every step of every recipe there are plenty of other resources. It’s the freaking Internet. I love your blog for its own personal style. You rock. (I do feel like a creepy fan girl but I’ll get over it. Hopefully.)

Anyway I’m an awful cook but this recipe looks sooo delicious. Will attempt it right after I google “napkin” cause it was in your pic but you didn’t explain anything about it.

    1. Limes ARE gorgeous!!! Love Melissas post 🙂
Great looking recipe. I’ve honestly never used jicama before, and for once, a recipe–your recipe–inspires me to go buy and make 🙂
      Thanks so much!

  3. I always look forward to your pictures, and I love when you re-use your previous recipes in new, creative ones.

Google Jicama, it’s not that hard. I agree Adrianna ^^^totes rude.

Your blog is the best. I literally check it every day. Also IG. But I promise I’m not a stalker. Mostly.

    xoxo

  4. Hi!
Show a green papaya, please. A good one. Size?
Whole then cut in half or whatever you do.
    Did you peel?
Bet we all know what a lime looks like. 🙂
Oh, I know what a jicama is, but some might not.
Too excited about your trip. And you should be. Sounds like fun. San Fransisco.
Drives me nuts when bloggers just show same picture twenty times. Steps. Please. You get a good grade mostly. 😉
    Thank you.
