Oh Amelia Bedelia, my little demon-corgi-love-child, you!
Now that I’ve lived with a puppy for 14 days, I feel like I can speak as a half-way authority on them. Here are a few notes/thoughts:
1. You will drop serious dollars on puppy toys, beds, treats, etc…and then they’ll become fascinated with empty water bottles, your shoe laces, your scarves and your first adult couch. Their mission with all of these objects, that you love and adore, is to destroy them. DE-STROY.
2. You will let your puppy sleep in your bed because “it’s so cute OMG!” and then it will sleep on your head and on your pillow. Oh and puppies don’t sleep in. No. Never. They’ll wake you up at 6:30am every morning BY NIPPING AT YOUR FACE.
3. You will take your puppy outside to do its business, you’ll come back inside thinking you’re the owner of the year for tending to this lil’ thing so diligently, you’ll turn your back and then…BOOM! accident on the carpet. DUDE!
4. You will wake up one morning, make the little creature treats, it will smell the peanut butter and follow you around everywhere. You will bake them, allow them to cool and give your little animal a try; her wiggling little (non-existent corgi) tail will tell you she’s excited and she’ll eat the treat so vigorously that you’ll forget her puppy-terror ways. Perfect.
But seriously, I LOVED THOSE SHOES, AMELIA!!
Amelia is on a grain-free diet. Mainly because my childhood dog, Chuck, is on a raw-food diet and he’s thirteen, has never had a health issue and runs around like a puppy. And then proceeds to sleep like an old man, tongue out and all. BUT you get what I’m saying.
Whatever diet your dog is on, he/she will LOVE these.
Garbanzo flour is the total jam for dogs. Coming in at 22%, garbanzo flour has the highest protein level out of all flours. Also, it’s super inexpensive. Double win.
These treats have minimal ingredients and couldn’t be easier to make.
Annnd, they’re Amelia approved.
Ingredients
- 1 medium banana mashed
- 3 tablespoons creamy natural peanut butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 3/4 cup garbanzo bean flour
- *1/4 cup rolled oats optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
- In a small bowl, mix together the banana, peanut butter and egg; mix until completely combined. To a medium bowl, add the flour and rolled oats; mix. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and combine until the dough comes together.
- Transfer the dough to a piece of heavily floured wax paper. Note: The dough will be sticky so flouring everything (wax paper, rolling pin and cookie cutter) is important. Roll the dough to a 1/4-inch thickness and cut out the cookies using a cookie cutter of choice. Re-roll the scraps and cut out more cookies. (I used a small heart cookie cutter and ended up with 22 cookies.) Transfer the cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet. These cookies won't spread so placing them close together is okay. If you don't want to roll the dough out, alternatively, you can scoop teaspoons of dough onto a baking sheet, flattening the cookies with the ball of your palm.
- Bake the cookies for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Allow the cookies to come to room temperature on a cooling rack. Cookies will be good for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
These treats look and sound so good for our poochies! My beloved Golden Retriever, has such severe food allergies, however, (which includes dairy, eggs, peanut butter) I am unable to try these for him 🙁
Your Corgi is adorable, by the way!
What a wonderful recipe. I have a Yorkie that can’t eat grain foods, plus can only eat turkey and chicken grain free foods. When I made this recipe I took the dough and laid it on a cookie sheet. I smoothed it out to about 1/8″ then scored it with a pizza cutter so all I had to do was break them apart. I made them about 1″x1″ squares. The recipe made about 70 pieces. Charlie loves them. Thanks for the recipe.
Awww yay! Glad Charlie loved them!
Try adding pureed or shredded beats, acorn squash or carrots.
You can use oat flour, or rice flour, coconut flour…just don’t use nut flour espesially almond or brazil nut, they can make them sick.
I have been glutin free for over a year. I make pancakes and waffles that the dogs love.
Love pampering the babies!!!
I can’t wait to make these for my furbabies! I just made some grain free peanut butter bites for them, so I will make these next.
Thank you for posting this!
Hi, thanks for the recipe. Is there any other type of flour you could use as a substitute of garbazo flour? Would coconut or almond flour work?
I actually haven’t tried it with another flour. Some people have tried it with coconut flour and they had to play with the consistency a bit. This recipe is VERY flimsy so feel free to use coconut flour, you might just need to add a splash of water or add a bit more flour.
Thanks for the recipe! I have used it a few times for my grain free scotties and they love them. I do experiment a bit too, today’s christmas cookie treats used a small zucinni and half can plain pumpkin in blender with egg…added about three tablespoons of braunsweiger liver spread, a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil, and the garbazo flour, with just a dash of organic sea salt. I make “drop cookies” and pat them flat with a bit of the grated parmsian cheese on my fingertips too. would imagine could do this without the liver, just adding some of the dried parm cheese as the flavor.
Oh that’s awesome!
Hi Adrianna, Thank you for all the great advise. Our fur babies are our children and give us the same medical or otherwise delicate issues and they depend on us to take good care of them. Going to the vet and paying hundreds per visit is just not in our budget, so we love to have alternative medicine for our babies also.
I purchased Spelt flour for another dog treat recipe from another site and was wondering if I could possibly use it in your recipe?
Thanks and hope you and yours are having a very Merry Christmas!
Peggy L.
My dog loves these cookies but I have to say, I don’t know how you were able to roll them out. The dough was soooo sticky it stuck to everything–fingers… floured wax paper…everything! I even tried putting it in the fridge for a while, but nothing helped. In the end, I used two spoons to scoop and scrape little blops onto the cookie sheet. They apparently taste good, but they are not the cute little bone shaped cutouts that I had hoped for. I did omit the oats…when you do this, do you add more garbanzo flour?
Ahhh sorry this gave you troubles. Yes, you can just add more flour until it comes together and no longer becomes sticky.
Hi!
Is the treat going to be crumbly? I want to make it crumble-free so it wont make a mess. I know tapioca flour would work great!
Nope not crumbly. And I highly encourage you NOT to use tapioca flour with these ratios.
Today I’m making my second batch…Sammy Loves These.
He’s allergic to the colors in regular dog treats and food, hence that is why I went hunting for a healthy treat recipe…
This time, a double batch !
Thanks a Bunch
Aww. Love this! HI SAMMY!!
This is a nice recipe, but oats are a grain. This recipe is not really grain-free.
That’s why it specifically says it’s optional.
What would you suggest using in place of the peanut butter? My dogs are allergic to peanut butter and unfortunately to all other nut butters. Thank you!
Hi Alice, Hmm…I’m not sure; I haven’t tested it with a substitute. Maybe apple sauce might work?
Organic pumpkin puree is a great alternative and very good for dogs. Just make sure it’s 100% pure pumpkin (not the pie filling).
Every month I make this receipt for my oblong corgi sheltie and his pup friends! And I’m finally getting around to thanking you for such a great recipe! So thanks! I’m pretty sure these treats have contributed to Cody putting on some corgi plump.
Awww yay! This makes me so happy. So glad!
thank you for sharing – looking forward to trying these out on my 2 old dudes soon!
Aww hope your 2 dudes love them!
You pup is adorable. I have shared her picture with friends at the dog park. This is my third batch (actually making a double and trying the applesauce with one). Don’t want to run out. My dog Riley loves these and after going out in the morning runs to her cookie jar. I took a batch to our dog park Halloween party and all the dogs loved them too. I have shared this recpe with many. Thanks again.
Oh man, this makes me so happy. Thanks for sharing!
Doodle loves these! I couldn’t find garbanzo bean flour at my local store so I used 1 1/2 cups of brown rice flour and 1/4 cup of ground flax seeds instead.
I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED A CORGI. YOURS IS SO CUTE.
THANK YOU FOR THE RECIPE. I MAKE THE FOOD FOR MY DOGS.
NOW I CAN BAKE FOR THEM
HAHA! Thank you!
