Shrimp Curry

New Years is approaching at lightening speed and for everyone that means coming up with a new lame New Years resolution, which will inevitably be broken or given up on by the third week in January.  So in lieu of attempting to not be a total failure at the beginning of a new year, I’ve decided to set a resolution that I know I can’t screw up.  Ready for it?  My New Years resolution for 2010: Drink more water. That’s it. Drink more water.  It’ll leave me with clearer skin, no more headaches due to dehydration, more energy, and a healthier body overall.  Not too shabby right? I feel like I can take this on. I’ve even gone so far as to buy a cute polka dot canteen that I plan on toting around with me everywhere I go.

Apple Butter

By Caroline, December 26, 2009

AppleButter1

Okay, I know that Adrianna already spilled the beans. I am no longer living with my boyfriend in LA. No, I am now living with my FIANCE, which by the way, I’m still having trouble  saying to people. Fiance is one of those words that seems a little too big and surreal to say out loud. It’s a word that says that I am NEVER going to have a boyfriend ever again, which makes me feel grown up in ways I never thought possible. It also means that I, the girl that has never worn rings throughout her entire life, now has a ring that is never going to come off, and I’m actually okay with this.

There’s something else that I have to tell you is never going to happen again. I am never making apple butter again. Never. Again. I know, it must be a rare blog post when the author confesses that although the final product turned out perfectly, she has no desire whatsoever to return to it. To fully understand this, I need to explain my reasoning for making apple butter in the first place. When Adrianna and I made the fig jam a couple months back, I was stunned at how easy it was to make. I couldn’t help but ask, “Why haven’t I been making my own jam all my life?” So for Christmas I decided I would make a homemade canned gift for friends and family, and after much debate I chose to take on apple butter.

Red Velvet Hot Chocolate with Cream Cheese Whipped Cream

By Adrianna, December 21, 2009

RedVelvetChocolate2

Uhohhh! It’s a few days before Christmas and I haven’t done a lick of Christmas shopping. I guess you could say I’ve been distracted doing other random things, like sleeping for 14 hrs straight…and watching past seasons of Top Chef…and, uh, watching episode after episode of Avec Eric (which by the way, if you haven’t watched you’re totally missing out).  I essentially have had better things to do then gear up and go to the wretched mall.  And since I’ve waited so long, I can’t order anything online without being penalized by high shipping costs, but still I’m not too worried.  I have a feeling I’ll just make myself some pancakes and this hot chocolate and my problems will go away.

And plus, here at A Cozy Kitchen we’ve been busy doing other “life” stuff…like getting proposed to. Yep, you’ve heard right. Just nights ago Chase got on one knee and asked his lady, Caroline, to marry him.  It’s pretty exciting stuff and I’m totally psyched to plan a wedding cake, if not make it myself, which I’m secretly scared to do. One thing Caroline and I have talked about, of course, is the cake…and we’re both leaning toward a red velvet cake with a butter cream frosting. So in lieu of my Caroline becoming an honest woman, I bring you the liquid, winter version of her future cake: Red Velvet Hot Chocolate with Cream Cheese Whipped Cream!

White Chocolate Peppermint Bark

By Caroline, December 16, 2009

Bark2

For the last couple years I have been trying to come up with some homemade edible gifts to give to family and friends. I figure that it’s nice to get something you couldn’t find in a store, and quite frankly, I just cannot afford to buy everyone I know a $30 sweater.

CandyCane

This year the gift du jour was apple butter. To say the absolute least, it was quite a chore challenge. More on that later, but let me just say that when I was in the middle of grinding up apples in my kitchen sink I longed for last year, when I handed out little bags of white chocolate peppermint bark. I should have gone against my instinct to break tradition, cause white chocolate bark couldn’t be easier to make. And seriously, people go nuts over this stuff. I missed it so much that I whipped up a batch and brought it into work. By noon the whole tray was gone, which tells me some people had this for breakfast.

Homemade Thin Mints

By Adrianna, December 14, 2009

ThinMints

I have a girl crush, everyone.  Don’t you ever get girl crushes?  Wait, you don’t know what a girl crush is?  Alright…well let me break it down for you because I can guarantee you have one, but you just don’t know it.

A girl crush is when you think another girl is smart, funny, interesting, and just generally awesome. You probably want to be her friend, and better yet, sort of BE her. I get them all the time. I’m majorly crushin’ on Joy The Baker, Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere, the girl from this band, and various other girls.  Recently I’ve been sort of obsessed with Heidi Swanson from 101 Cookbooks. She’s amazing.  I’m not a vegetarian, nor a health freak when it comes to cooking, but it’s great because now I can live this healthy life vicariously through her, though I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.  Whatever.

Mom’s Holiday Cheese Dip

By Caroline, December 11, 2009

Cheese1

There are two clear types of holiday recipes. There are the time-tested kind, the ones that have been made over and over again, and will always be around because 1) everyone loves them and 2) the person making the recipe could do it with their eyes closed and one hand tied behind their back. There are also the newer kinds of recipes, those that are maybe a little more modern, with unusual ingredients and were probably found in a magazine or, ahem, a food blog.

Cheese5

This recipe is hands-down an example of the first type. My mother’s cheese dip graces pretty much every holiday party she attends in December, it is a rare occasion when she’s able to bring any leftovers home. This is the kind of appetizer that you snack on before dinner, and then return to when you’ve finished dessert. It’s the kind that you can’t stand in front of for more than 5 seconds without compulsively piling some on a cracker, until you’re wondering where all the crackers went and why you feel so full all of a sudden.

White Hot Chocolate with Ginger

By Caroline, December 9, 2009

HotChocolate1

I know that in other parts of the country it’s been snowing since October, but this is FINALLY the first week in LA that I decidedly cannot wear flip flops. I guess winter has officially arrived. Therefore, it’s also the first week that warm beverages have actually seemed appealing to me. I normally stick to iced drinks, but on a day that’s cold and rainy and leaves a thin layer of ice on my car, all I can think about is going back inside and drinking a steaming mug of hot chocolate.

ChocolateChips

Years ago when I was in high school my friends and I used to get together on a Friday nights and cook extravagant 4-course meals instead of spending our money on over-priced burgers at a restaurant. On one such night we made white-hot chocolate with ginger, and I haven’t ever forgotten it. This drink is rich and creamy with some spice to it; it’s the perfect dessert drink to warm you up on a cold winter night.

Eat My Blog Charity Bakesale

By Adrianna, December 7, 2009

EatMyBlog-Table2

This past Saturday Caroline and I got up bright and early–I can’t say a typical habit of mine on a weekend morning–to do something good: sell baked goods for charity, and, boy, did we have an awesome time.  Cathy, founder of Gastronomy Blog, came up with the amazing idea to throw a charity bake sale, bringing LA food bloggers together with 100% of the proceeds going to the LA Regional Food Bank.  The impressive spread took place in the front patio at Zeke’s Smokehouse in West Hollywood.

The spread was quite beautiful and all of the baked goods were really impressive.  We didn’t take nearly as many pictures as we usually do, mainly because when the crowd came, it was a complete blur! By 2:30pm everything was sold out with more than $3,000 raised! Quite a feat for a few ladies and gentlemen armed with only sugar and flour.  And since it was SO successful, another bake sale is already in the works for 2010.  I have an idea, maybe California should have a bake sale…just sayin’.

Here are a few photos for your drooling pleasure:

Chocolate Popcorn with Sea Salt

By Adrianna, December 3, 2009

ChocolatePopcornwithSeaSaltBowl

It’s December.  Are you panicking yet?  A lot of people I know are.  December, for many people, means a long list of parties to juggle, decorating, wearing uncomfortable, sparkly holiday dresses, gifts to buy for family, trips to plan, all while still tending to normal life stuff.  And despite all of these things, we still LOVE the holidays. In leiu of your stress, I present you with a gift; think of it as a stress-free Holiday gift from me to you: Chocolate Popcorn with Sea Salt.

It’s my dear friend Johnna‘s snack of choice to make at dinner parties, and she, by far, is the best dinner party thrower I’ve met. Why is she so good ? Well for starters she makes this and puts it out as people pour in.  It’s the perfect distractor while last minute scrambling is done in the kitchen.

Breakfast “Slop”

By Caroline, December 1, 2009
Eggs1

A couple weeks ago I went camping in Joshua Tree National Park, and was introduced to the breakfast lovingly called “Slop” that my friend Mel has made for friends in the past. It was unanimously decided that she would forever be in charge of breakfast on any future camping trip, and, despite it’s unattractive name, I urge you to give this a try. Whether cooking over a camp fire or in a skillet at home, this was an easy and simple breakfast that would satisfy just about anyone. As our very first Guest Blogger, here’s what Mel had to say:

Everyone loves camping.  Being outside under the stars, enjoying food cooked over an open fire, waking up to the fresh mountain air.  You walk out into the beautifully cool morning air, and sit down to a beautiful breakfast of—- cereal and granola bars?!?!   No, no no!!  I love breakfast, and no outdoorsy mountain setting is going to take that piping hot egg-y goodness away from me!  But what to do- you certainly can’t poke a stick through an egg!
