Zucchini Fritters with Goat Cheese

Ever notice how certain events seem to occur in multiples? Like, how the film industry will put out two movies about deadly volcanoes in the same month, or how Michael Jackson died on the same day as Farrah Fawcett? It seems that the same phenomenon often occurs in the blogging world. Granted, there are a million blogs out there and it shouldn’t be unusual for us to all have some of the same recipes in mind, but really, is it that hard for us all to just post them at different times?

That brings me to my current post. Now, zucchini is one of my favorite veggies, and in true Southern fashion I feel that one way to make your vegetables even better is to fry them. I cooked a big batch of these fritters, ate them all that afternoon and felt content that I had found something tasty and unique to share with you all.

Shrimp Scampi

Everyone has a word that grosses them out, and most of the time that word doesn’t necessarily insinuate anything gross.  For instance, a friend of mine is repulsed by the word “moist”, which is weird because moist, to most, is a good thing.  I mean, give me a moist piece of chocolate cake any day.  But I get it–we as humans are weird like that. Wanna know my word?  Scampi.  I know, I know–it doesn’t make any sense. There’s no logic to it.  I mean, what do I have against “scampi”?  Honestly, I can’t really tell you except that the word is unappealing to me.  I can’t tell you the last time I had Shrimp Scampi and it’s all because its name–it is so not fair.  Poor Mr. Shrimp Scampi. So when I was thumbing through the pages of this month’s issue of Food & Wine, it definitely wasn’t the name of this dish that drew me in, instead it was its butter sauce speckled with parsley and red pepper flakes and tons of garlic.  Oh, and the awesome promise of its accompaniment being a crisp, cold glass of chardonnay.

Blueberry Crisp Bars

By Caroline, September 20, 2009

In my head I know it’s September already, but I am having a hard time letting go of summer. However, the world is doing it’s best to let me know that autumn is here. I have to carry a jacket with me since it is no longer guaranteed that it will be meltingly hot outside. There are just a few more leaves lying in the street every morning and a few less on the tree branches, and the flowers outside our apartment are starting to droop and shrivel ever so slightly.  The most obvious sign of the changing season, though, is that pumpkin flavored lattes have appeared in every coffee shop in the city. Ever since the birth of flavored coffee drinks, it seems that pumpkin has become the poster food of autumn.

Beer Floats at The Golden State

By Adrianna, September 15, 2009

BeerFloatTheGoldenState

When I was nine, my dad was really into making Coke floats and naturally my brother and I were his partners in crime, because to kids there’s nothing better than soda and ice cream in the same cup.  But then you grow up and go to college and trade in Coke for cheap beer, and then you grow up a little more and realize that Bud Light is closer to urine than “real beer”.  And soon after that you develop this weird beer snobbery and scoff at the idea of drinking anything but some fancy schmancy IPA.  Then someone recognizes your new sophisticated taste and thinks to themselves, Man, under all that beer snobbery what you really are is a nine year old in a twenty-something year old body, and what you really need is something that’ll make you feel like the grown-up kid that you are…hmm…I’d say a beer float might do, does that sound right? Well if it does then The Golden State is your place.

White Kiwi-Apple Sangria

Holy heck, is it September already??? Summer, where did you go?!?! I haven’t seen nearly as much of you as I would have liked, and now, you’re leaving already.  There’s so much to do in LA, and I feel like I didn’t do nearly as much as I had hoped. I wanted to see a concert at the Hollywood Bowl at least 3 times (I only went twice) I wanted to go to Cinespia at least every other weekend (I went 3 times all summer) and I swore that I would take much more advantage of the beach being only an hour away (I went twice, and one of those times was in April).

Vanilla Ricotta Doughnuts

By Adrianna, September 7, 2009

I love my morning routine. Once complete, I’m prepped to conquer the world.  It goes a little something like this: make a mug of green tea with honey; check emails and bank account; then onto my website list: nytimes, cnn, my long list of various food blogs and…TMZ.  I’m not really proud of it,  but it is a car wreck on the side of the highway that is the internet.  It’s a silly little nasty habit that I can’t seem to shake.

Chocolate Hazelnut Meringue Cookies

By Caroline, September 2, 2009

I have never been a big fan of meringues. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with them, they’re just not normally my thing. I always thought they were like the marshmallows from Lucky Charms that had been blown up to about 100 times their normal size and then called cookies. Some of you might be drooling over this, but to me, it’s always seemed like just too much sugar and fluff.

However, about a week ago, for no apparent reason that anyone can detect, I got a CRAVING for meringues. This kind of thing happens to me a lot, just ask Chase. Out of the clear blue sky I will all of sudden develop a craving that blinds me from anything else going on in the world except for my one desire to eat this food. For days I languished over the fact that I couldn’t keep a thought in my head due to my distraction with meringues. Part of me was tempted to go down the street and buy some store bought ones, but now I’m a food blogger for goodness’ sake, if I’m going to crave something foolish I should at least go all the way to get it out of my system and learn how to cook it.
