Black & White Rice Krispie Treats

This is my new picnic basket

picnicbasket1

Isn’t it cute? Don’t you just want to pick it up and take it places?

People told me not to buy this, because they said I will never use it. I am absolutely convinced that I will use it, but just to be sure, we made a deal, this picnic basket and I.

Here are the promises I made:

  • I promise not to put you in my garage, forget that you’re there and never think of you again until we move, at which point I take you to Goodwill. This will NOT happen to you.
  • I promise not to let something spill inside of you, and if I do, I will clean it up. I will NOT let it sit until it becomes gross and moldy and I’m so disgusted I never want to touch you again.
  • I promise not to let my dog chew on you, and I won’t let other dogs at the park pee on you either. That’s just gross really…
  • I promise to take you to many fabulous places, but only when it’s sunny and warm. Picnics just aren’t fun in the cold.
  • I promise to fill you only with yummy things, like these black & white Rice Krispie Treats.

Homemade Pici Pasta & Bolognese: Part II of II

By Adrianna, June 23, 2009

Pici originated in Tuscany, Italy and really is as rustic as it gets.  No machines or fancy equipment required—just your cute little hands and a little upper body strength.  Upper body strength, you ask? Oh I said it right—it’s not for the weak; but poor housewives did it for centuries so don’t be a wuss.

Cheddar and Pinto Bean Patties

By Caroline, June 19, 2009

It’s Monday, and the day is finally over. I’m home after it’s already dark, the dog’s been walked and all I really want to do is sit on the couch and do absolutely nothing. I mean, lifting the remote seems like it may take too much energy at this point. However, my stomach is angrily growling at me, and I need to think of something to feed it.

I have a few recipes that I keep around for such dire occasions as these, and this is one of them. The best things about these bean patties is that you can keep all of these ingredients on hand and just whip it together when you get home from an endless day of work. If you’re really organized, you could prep them the day before and keep them in the fridge until you’re ready to cook the next day. But honestly, I am never, ever, even remotely that organized and I love any recipe that says I can mix some pantry items in a bowl, throw it on a skillet and call it dinner.

Homemade Pici Pasta & Bolognese: Part I of II

sauce

When I was a kid and not under my parents’ supervision, my godfather, Don, used to let me watch mafia movies. I know, I know—it’s a strange coincidence that I used to watch mafia movies with my “godfather” whose actual name is Don. But sometimes in life things really do work out like that. Promise.  And to this day I really LOVE mafia movies.  They were the ones who taught me the importance of a good sauce.

Curried Peanut Soup

By Caroline, June 9, 2009

So, it’s June gloomy here in LA. It’s raining outside, and it’s been cloudy for weeks. I’m tired of wearing jackets and long pants and am ready for flip-flops and flowy skirts. The upside to living in LA is supposed to be the weather. “Sunny LA” as they say.

I guess that if I’m going to find a bright side, it’s that I can make some more Curried Peanut Soup, which normally only makes its appearance in winter months. It’s creamy, spicy, and nothing is more of a comfort food than peanut butter.

Blueberry Scones

It’s “June Gloom” in LA, and while most people spend complaining about it being cold, hazy and foggy outside, I wake up excited about it. I mean, LA is sunny EVERDAY so I welcome to change. In fact, the dreary weather actually makes me really happy. True fact: When I was a kid living in Ft. Lauderdale, I used to turn the air conditioning really low so I had a reason to curl up in a blanket and sip hot tea. I like being cozy. Whatevs.

A Cozy Grilled Cheese

By Caroline, June 3, 2009

Okay so I know you’ve already heard by now. Adrianna and I were official competitors in the 7th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational. It was…shall we say…an experience.

So, this is how it started. A friend of mine sent me a link for the competition while I was bored at work one day, with a joking line about how silly it was. Upon seeing that such an event did actually exist, I was consumed with a desire to take part somehow. I sent a message to Adrianna, my foodie partner-in-crime, and within a couple hours we were entered to compete.
